Good Afternoon All Great Authors here In the Author Marketing Powerhouse,
I take this opportunity to introduce myself as I am a new Member on this teriffic commnity.
My name is Michael Phelps. Now to clear any possible confusion . . . I am NOT that young, good-looking, talented, Olympic Champion with all that Gold and a bevey of beautiful women chasing him all around the Globe.
I AM Michael Phelps, the (NOT so) young, (NOT so) good-looking, (BUT - I think) talented WRITER, (NO) Gold, I'm happily divorced (at least I hope my former wife is, I did not derserve her) and NO bevey of beautiful women chasing me anywhere.
I am a proud Veteran of the United States Air Force where I served as a Senior Military Police-Combat Defense Forces (Viet Nam). I retired as Chief Investigator for a prominent Miami, Florida Law firm, specializing in criminal defense.
In 1987 I had a chance encounter with Ellie Janssen, first wife of the iconic Actor and my friend, DAVID JANSSEN. Ellie had just relocated to Miami from Las Vegas and was being given a tour of the world-renowned Jockey Club, where I served on the Board of Governors. As she walked by with Membership Director Ms. Bobbie Starr, I began wracking my brain to recall who this beautiful lady was. I had not seen her in over twenty years. The following evening, my brother Bob and I were seated in the cocktail lounge when Ellie and Ms. Starr entered. I noted she kept staring in our direction, and I stared back.
"MIKE?" She said.
"Yes . . . " I replied.
"It's me, Ellie Janssen."
I smiled, stood and walked to thier table. As I began to extend my hand, without standing, she almost pulled me down, and Gave me a big hug, as if WE were 'long-lost friends'. Actually, I had only met Ellie on three occasions during her marriage to David.
"You know each other?" Bobbie asked.
"Yes, he was a close friend of David's . . . we've known each other over twenty years." Ellie said.
I invited Ellie and Bobbie to join my brother and I for dinner and they readily accepted. Over dinner the main topic of conversation of course was David Janssen. There was no mention of the divorce, little about Ellie's path after the divorce, but serious conversation over his sudden death seven years earlier. Soon, over many lunches and dinners, Ellie and I formed a friendship that had not been possible during her marriage to David. One evening I asked why she had not written a book about David. She indicated she always wanted to, but had no idea where to start. I suggested we could find a 'Ghost Writer' to work with her. She indicated she did not have the resources to do that. I was stunned, having known David had been very generous in their divorce. I suggested I could fund the book and be repaid from the royalties. She was thrilled at the idea, finally being able to tell her story.
We engaged a well known, award winning author in Miami. Six weeks later, Ellie became disouraged with his writing style and summarily discharged him. She had heard of an Author in Santa Barbara, California who had just written a book about Liberace, with one of the entertainer's alleged male concubines. We contacted her and she was excited about the project, exclaiming she had been a 'die-hard' fan of David's. We agreed on the terms and I paid her air fare to Miami and enscounced her in a suite at The Jockey CLub. Over the ensuing five weeks she and Ellie worked in teh suite daily. I would join them for dinner in the4 Club dining room. Soon, Ellie became disenchanted with her style as well and discharged her. I asked Ellie if I could read what she and the 'Ghost Writers' had written. It was less than one hundred pages. After reading, and having known David well, I suggested to Ellie that she and I could write the book ourselves. She agreed with renewed enthusiasim. I suggested the title and "DAVID JANSSEN-MY FUGITIVE" was created.
Ellie and I worked on this project for four years. It included several trips to Beverly Hills, Palm Springs, Las Vegas and New York, where we interviewed many celebrities who had been close friends with Ellie and David during their marriage; including Michelle Lee, Paul and Peggy Burke, Lucille Ball and Gary Morton, Sidney Korshak, Ralph Stolkin, Bob Hope, Gary Cooper, Telly Savallas, David's mother Berniece Janssen, his long-time Secretary Victor Gentile and several others. As I was engaged at the Law firm full time, most of our collaboration was done in the evenigs and weekends. In mid-1994 the manuscript of three hundred and fifty pages was handed over to our Editor and publisher. Soon, we were given the "edited" manuscript which had been cut to one hundred and fifty pages, including twelve pages containing photos of many Hollywood Stars with whom David had worked.
"DAVID JANSSEN-MY FUGITIVE" was published in Hardcover in December of 1994 by Lifetime Books, Inc. of Hollywood, Florida. Lifetime Books and Frederick Fell Publishers, Inc. released Paperback Editions in 1995, 1996 and 1997. Combined sales were in excess of 1.2 Million copies world-wide. The FOURTH EDITION - UPDATED edition in Hardcover, at the original 1994 price of $18.95 on July 10, 2009 through Blue Line Publishing House, Inc.
Based on the success of the book, and upon retiring from the Law firm, I chose to embark on a new career. I decided I would write books. I have chosen to write about something I know well; police procedurals, detective novels, crimes . . . specifically murders.
"THE EXECUTION OF JUSTICE", my debut novel introduces my readers to the "MIKE WALSH DETECTIVE NOVELS" series. This novel is based on the true story of the murder of a close friend and one-time mentor of mine, Detective Sergeant Jack R. Ohrberg, Robbery & Homicide Unit of the Indianapolis Police Department. In this novel, I have made every attempt to 'humanize' the dedicated men and women police officers and detectives who make so many personal sacrifices at the expense of their families and themselves in order to chase down the really bad guys and make the streets a little safer for their communities. This is an intimate portrait of these courageous law enforcement officers, who all too often pay the ultimate price.
"THE JOCKEY'S JUSTICE" is the second in the "Mike Walsh Detective Novels" series. This novel is based on an actual murder case I worked as Chief Investigator for the Law firm. A popular, winning horse racing Jockey was britally beaten and shot to death on the last day of the racing season in a small western Kentucky town. He had been preparing to return to his home in Miami. The case remained unsolved for eight years when suddenly, police officers burst into his widow's home and arrested her and their son-in-law and charged them with the crtime. The widow's sister retains the law firm and Walsh and his assistant, Rosa Cabillo are assigned the task of travelling to Kentucky to investigate the case and unearth evidence to prove their clients' innocence. That was good news for Wlash, as the closest airport to the town was Indianapolis International Airport, his hometown. This would allow Walsh the opportunity to visit family and former colleagues in the Indianapolis Police Department. An additional potential assest to the investigation could be the fact Walsh's paternal Grandfather and two Uncles had been Circuit Court Judges in Kentucky, and Walsh felt perhaps that fact could insure close cooperation from the Commonwealth Attorney and the local police. Mike Walsh and Rosa Cabillo were not prepared for what their investigation would discover. This is an in-depth look inside the sleazy under-belly of the 'Sport of Kings'. Walsh and Cabillo learned of a previous murder of a Jockey under extremely similar circumstances,, a case which remained unsloved, another Jockey who simply vanished. They discovered evidence of race fixing, horse doping, illegal gambling, ties to the Chicago mob, inept cops, a judge with a personal vendetta and a prosecutor with tunnel vision. "THE JOCKEY'S JUSTICE" takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride into a fascinating sport. The novel is set to be released by Blue Line Publishing House, Inc. in Paperback Edition in late September, 2010.
The release of the Fourth Edition of "DAVID JANSSEN-MY FUGITIVE" has resulted in many, many of the loyal fans of David Janssen, from all over the United States, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany and several South Americans who have contacted me wanting to know David's point of view. It was quite obvious that David Janssen-My Fugitive was Ellie's recollections of her life with David and did not reflect HIS thought, feelings or opinions.
I have been inspired to write "DAVID JANSSEN-CONFIDENTIAL Conversations With A Friend". In this book I will relate hundreds of conversations between David Janssen and myself which occured over the last fifteen years of his life. In these conversations we discussed a myriad of subject matter; from his career, his relationship with his mother, Berniece, his step-father Eugene Janssen, his half-sisters Jill and Terry, his marriage to and divorce from Ellie, his relationship with Ellie's daughters Kathy and Diane, his alleged womanizing, his drinking habits (of which I shared), his brief affair with Suzanne Pleshette, his volitle affair with Rosemary Forsythe, his affair with and deep love for award winning Singer and Songwriter Carol Connors, his marriage to and planned divorce from Dani Greco Janssen, his opinions of many of the Hollywood Stars, Directors and Producers with whom he worked, his service in the Army, the Viet Nam war and politicians. I have maintained his confidence for many, many years even while working with Ellie on her book. I am no longer amazed at the devoted fans that remain loyal thirty years after his untimely and shocking death. I do not believe David will feel betrayed by me, instead I believe he will be smiling down, maybe have a hearty laugh or two, and be pleased to know his fans will finally know the REAL man David Janssen was. I am hoping to have this book available in December of 2010.
My current books are available at amazon.com, barnesand noble.com, all other Internet Booksellers as well as on my own web site, www.michaelphelpsnovels.com.
