Yokes that Fit and Yokes that Don’t
Here in the United States July 4th is one of our biggest national holidays. It’s the day we celebrate our freedom as a nation. So, it seems right that we would take this time to look at freedom as it pertains to being a Mountain Taker.
“It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1
Mountain Taker, you may be the freest person on your mountain. If you know Jesus you are free!
How do you live in that freedom? The rest of the verse gives us some insight. “Keep standing firm…” There are many things that will seek to squash or rob our enjoyment of the freedom Jesus has for us to walk in. NO power can truly eliminate that freedom, but sometimes in order to experience it we need to stand firm. If we don’t, we may find ourselves “…subject again to a yoke of slavery.” ; a yoke that no longer fits.
Yokes, it turns out are a good way to judge how free we are. There are yokes that don’t fit; yokes of slavery, and ones that do.
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
Yokes that don’t fit are heavy and wearying. The Lord has on occasion in prayer let me actually feel the weight of a wearying yoke somebody was carrying. It hurts!
Jesus does have yokes (assignments) for each of us to carry. But He’s called us to carry them in freedom. If the yoke is heavy, and doesn’t fit, it may not be His at all. If you are feeling overwhelmed and weighed down by the “yoke” you are carrying, it may be time to ask the Lord if you have the right one.
You might be surprised by what you hear.
